Even though Kenya’s economy has grown rapidly in recent years, poverty still continues to be a problem. Third of the population live in poverty, and 31% of the population face food insecurity and poor nutrition.

The COVID-19 pandemic has destroyed the livelihoods of many Kenyans, pushing an estimated two million people into poverty. Population growth also creates challenges for the education system, and especially young people struggle to find employment.

Strengthening children’s right to quality education

Fida’s Country Programme aims to improve access to quality education and safer living environments for children and youth. Fida partners with the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya (FGCK). Work is implemented in five locations: Kakamega, Loita, Marsabit, Pwani and the informal settlements of Dagoretti and Mathare in Nairobi.

Promoting inclusive education and sexual and reproductive health and rights

The Country Programme includes teacher training on inclusive education.  School communities are trained on sanitation and hygiene practices. Children learn about their rights in children’s clubs. Vocational training and adult literacy classes are offered to improve people’s opportunities for employment and livelihood.

Communities are trained on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to reduce teenage pregnancies and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Psychosocial support is offered to caregivers and children. Sustainable farming skills are promoted to improve food security.

The partner receives training on financial and administrative management and advocacy to innovatively promote the rights of children and youth in Kenya.
